About the audit
You can download a resource pack here that contains all the details about the audit, its rationale and the underlying policy context behind it.
The pack also contains resources including posters for your practice waiting room that help patients to understand the role of antibiotics in managing dental infections.
With the increasing worldwide problem of antimicrobial resistance and the threat to public health there is a need to rationalise the prescribing of antibiotics.
One of the key recommendations made by ‘The Standing Medical Advisory Committee’s sub-group on antimicrobial resistance’ is surveillance of success through national, regional and local audits.
This project has now developed in a national audit.
You can find all the details of this here – including a patient information leaflet, a patient poster and guides to educational and training tools.
- To reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance infections
- Optimising antibiotic prescriptions to ensure that the;
- right antibiotic is prescribed
- optimal duration and dosage is prescribed
Audit your management of dental infections
FGDP(UK) recommends that dentists regularly audit their use of antimicrobials, and ideally their overall management of dental infections. Audit helps us fulfil our professional responsibility only to prescribe when appropriate, and provides evidence that we have done so. Our new self-audit tool for general dental practitioners, developed in conjunction with the British Dental Association and Public Health England, is an easy way to measure your practice against our guidance, and identify, implement and sustain any necessary changes.
Accessing and submitting the tool to Cheshire and Merseyside
We are no longer using our originally developed audit tool – instead you should download the tool (an excel spreadsheet) from the FGDP website here. The Cheshire & Merseyside LPN would like you to complete the “Simple Audit of Prescribing Activity”. Once completed you should upload the xcel file using the form on the right.
The audit will help you achieve a clearer understanding of how your antibiotic prescribing and record keeping for both the practice as a whole and individual performer differs from the recommendations described in FGDP guidance.
The FGDP also make the guidelines available, free of charge, under their Open Standards policy – click here for the link and then use the username and password “openstandards”.
You can start you audit by scrolling down and completing the boxes on the right hand side – instructions are provided on the left. We can email you a CPD credit and we will also send you a copy of the data you have entered for your records. Please feedback your experiences of the audit on the page following submission and look at the current data submitted by your colleagues.
Please complete the simple audit of prescribing activity and have your completed file ready for upload.
First of all enter your GDC number here and click “Get GDC Details”. It can take a few moments to retrieve the details. Sometimes you will get the response “Invalid GDC number” – if this happens it usually is due to an error with the GDC website – simply try again or enter your details manually. Once the GDC details have been populated, correct any errors and continue.
All of your contact details should now be correctly entered.
You can then simply select your excel file onto the form and submit.
